Rev it up

01-10-2018

Do you remember when you were young and could eat whatever tickled your fancy with absolutely no consequences? You’d share pizzas with friends after school and never even give a thought to hitting the gym? Well, sadly, as we age, our metabolisms starts to decline, meaning that it can become much more difficult to shift those few extra pounds and feel our best.

In fact, once you hit 40, your metabolism decelerates by about five percent every decade. Oestrogen levels in the body cause insulin levels to increase and thyroid levels to decrease. This results in more intense feelings of hunger. And when you’re hungrier, whether or not your body actually needs more fuel, you are likely to consume more calories. We also tend to lose muscle mass as we age, which also makes it more difficult to lose weight.

Though it all sounds pretty terrifying, there are tons of preventative measures to keep your metabolism chugging along like no time has passed. Here are the best ways to easily and effectively increase your metabolism.

  1. #1. Know the importance of water. If you didn’t already know how important it is to get the recommended amount of water every day, we’ve got another reason to add to the pile. Drinking 48 ounces of water every day can actually improve your metabolism, helping you burn 50 extra calories a day. Now where was that water bottle…

  1. #2. Become pro probiotics. No matter what age you are, probiotics are hugely beneficial to your overall wellness, but they are even more crucial as we age. Make sure you get the right kind of probiotics, soil-based organism probiotics, to reap the most benefits.

  1. #3. Ditch the pancakes. If you want to increase your metabolism, reaching for a smoothie in the morning is a great idea. Kicking off your day with a filling smoothie packed with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fibre will flush toxins and pollutants out of your body and get your metabolism going strong for the day ahead.

  1. #4. Begin the day with hot lemon water. Hot water with lemon should be on the menu first thing every morning. Warm or hot water can increase your metabolism by inducing thermogenesis, which encourages the metabolic process that burns calories. Lemon also increases your metabolism and can help you lose weight. It’s tasty, and it works! What more could you want?

  1. #5. Clear out your digestive system. If your pipes aren’t clear, how on earth do you expect your digestive system to work as it should? Once you move any obstructions, your whole body will work better, from digestion to metabolism to elimination. Stuck on how to get it unstuck? Try to consume lots of enzymes and fibre together. Also, it’s best to avoid gluten, dairy and refined sugar as much as possible. This will ensure that there’s less mucus clogging your systems.

  1. #6. Move! You probably knew we were going to say that, didn’t you? No matter what you choose to do, whether it’s an a** kicking Ro’asted ride or a leisurely walk in the Westerpark, staying physically active is the most important thing you can do to increase your metabolism. Muscle cells require energy, so they burn calories and burn more than fat cells do, even if you aren’t exercising. We bet those 45 minutes on the bike are looking pretty appealing now, aren’t they?
