Your Guide to Getting the Glow Post-Workout

13-11-2017

Rosy cheeks, dewy complexion (or is that sweat?!). We all love the way getting our blood pumping in a Ro’ride or during a jog in the Vondelpark makes us feel. But what about our skin? While exercise has innumerable benefits for your body, it can often take a toll on our complexion.

Luckily, that doesn’t have to be the case. With a few tricks up your sleeve – and a few extra minutes spent in the locker room after class – you can ensure that your skin hydrated, healthy and blemish-free.

#1. Keep your hands to yourself!

No, this is not just a directive aimed at creeps like Harvey Weinstein. This goes for you, too.  Although sweating really helps with skin detoxification, it also opens your pores, making them vulnerable to lots of dirt and bacteria that can clog them. Because you’re gripping those handlebars that other riders have, avoid touching your face during or immediately after your workout. Give your hands a quick wash before you even think about touching that flawless face!

#2. A ponytail is a girl’s best friend.

Don’t get us wrong, we know how chic long, luscious locks look with your new Rocycle sports bra, but when it comes time to sweat, you’re much better off pulling those strands into a high pony. Otherwise, when you sweat, your hair products can drip down onto your face or neck and cause breakouts. Nobody wants neck pimples, are we right?

#3. H2O is the way to go.

It’s a great start to hydrate during class, but that’s just not enough. When you step out of the studio, refill your bottle. You’ve lost so much moisture sweating it out in class that you need to hydrate post-workout to make sure your skin stays plump and supple.

#4. Take it easy.

You may think that a good, vigorous scrub is the best way to keep skin clean and clear after a killer class, but being too aggressive with exfoliation is actually the worst mistake you can make. Instead of rough, physical exfoliation (think apricot kernels), use a mild fragrance-free cleanser to wash away the sweat. Be gentle! And your skin will thank you for it.

#5. Face it: it’s not only about your face.

It’s easy to forget about the rest of your body once you’ve taken care of your face, but it’s important to give the rest of you just as much attention.  Don’t hang out in your sweaty kit for hours after class; strip off that gear and hop into a nice warm shower as soon as possible. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered with cleansing body wash in our showers to give that back a good scrub.

#6. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

As Zoolander said, moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty. Slather on the moisturizer (go for an oil-free moisturizer if you’re prone to breakouts) after washing your face and body. Your skin will drink it up as quickly as you guzzled your water bottle in class.
