Getting to Ro’ Zoï
At Rocycle we’re all about Mind Body Music, but, just as important is the fact that we’re a family. So, to make sure each class is not just a party but a reunion, we’d like to introduce some of our Ro’Regulars. Want to know where one of our dearest Utrecht riders, Zoï Dam, wears to sweat it out in class and her go-to healthy hotspot in Utrecht? Well, read on.
Hi Zoï! So cool to chat with you! We think you’re our first rider we’ve interviewed from Utrecht! Could you introduce yourself?
I’m Zoï, and I’m 25 years old. I work as a teamlead at YoungCapital. In my spare time I love traveling, eating, going for a good cup of coffee, spending a night on the couch with Netflix or Disney, taking care of my plants or going for a ride.
Sounds like we’re going to get along juuuust fine! Are you a native Utrechter? If not, what brings you here?
I was born and raised in Roosendaal, a small city in North-Brabant. For my studies I moved to Tilburg for a few years, lived in Amsterdam for half a year and, after finishing my bachelors, I went traveling. When I got back from traveling through Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia, my boyfriend and I decided we wanted to live in a bigger city than Tilburg. So it was either Amsterdam or Utrecht; the decision was easily made when we both found our job in Utrecht.
And Utrecht is actually such a cool city! There’s a reason we opened there! So we know how you got to Utrecht, but what brought you to Rocycle?
I think Rocycle first came up on my Instagram feed. Then one of my friends saw some adverts for the studio opening in Utrecht, and we both felt like we just needed to try it. So we bought the opening deal. Now, I’m 50+ rides further, and I don’t ever want to stop.
We hope you never do. How do your friends and family fit into your Rocycle story?
I think when you’d ask my friends to describe me, Rocycle would definitely be a part of the description. I’m just really enthusiastic about Rocycle, and I try to make my friends just as motivated to try it at least once. So far, I’ve gotten at least five of my colleagues and my boyfriend to join me every now and then on the bike, and I just love their faces and energy when they finish their rides. It’s so much more fun when you’re riding together.
Totally. It’s such a fun thing to do together! Most of our readers are familiar with the Amsterdam instructors, but Utrecht is still a bit of a mystery to the majority of them. Do you have a favourite instructor?
I love all the instructors at Rocycle Utrecht, but I do have a few favourites who all have their own beautiful qualities as instructors. I had my first ride with Alicia, and she’s just amazingly fierce, enthusiastic and has such a vibrant energy. I love Lidia’s rides; she’s so calm and energetic and, at the same time, she makes you love yourself more and more after every ride. Julie is just my spirit instructor; the motivational speeches she gives always have a personal touch about her own experiences which make them so relatable. And ofcourse I can’t forget Giulio; even during his morning rides, he already has so much energy and makes you go ‘faster, faster, faster’ every time.
Damn sounds like we’ll have to go to Utrecht more often! Do you have a favourite move on the bike?
I love single tapbacks and push ups! They make you feel so incredibly strong. The climb is something I look forward to during every ride as well – it just lets you get to know yourself better and discover new ways to tackle everyday resistance. The sprints at the end are just a really nice way to go all out and give everything for the last few seconds.
Hey, it sounds like you like just about every move haha! We don’t blame you! What do you like to wear to the studio?
I always wear leggings and a sports bra; it gets way too hot to wear t-shirts.
Did somebody say naked Rocycle? Now, we’re curious. What can we always find in your fridge?
Tough question. Since my work provides lunch and I do groceries for dinner every evening, there’s not much you can find in my fridge. You can always find loads of garlic and spicy red peppers in my kitchen though! The basics for every dinner.
Oooh, we’d like to come over for dinner from the sounds of it! Speaking of food, do you have a favourite healthy hotspot in Utrecht?
I love going for a coffee at Fig, and Gys has the most amazing vegetarian and vegan meals.
You’re clearly a spinning pro, but do you cycle outside of the studio?
I actually started cycling outside the studio. I bought a bike a few weeks ago, and when it’s sunny over the weekend, you’ll find my boyfriend and me riding our bikes.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Pff, I think of all questions this is one of the toughest ones. I feel like I’m an open book, and I love to share random stuff about myself or things I’ve done. Most people probably don’t know that I’m extremely afraid to be home alone, that I hate to hang up the laundry (it’s just socks everywhere) or that I’d like become a personal motivator or coach someday.
We think you’d be pretty great at it; you’ve already got some clients with us! Alright, last one. What does Rocycle mean to you?
Rocycle means opening up to a stronger version of myself every single ride. On the bike all insecurities disappear; it’s just you, the bike and, of course, the rest of the Ro’family on their bikes. You’re working on yourself, but you’re doing it together, which makes it so much more effective and addictive than doing a workout by yourself (at least for me).
Rocycle has already changed me in so many ways: it made me less insecure, it made me love myself more, it made me love working out again and it made me so much more positive on a daily basis. It kinda feels like therapy. It’s not only a workout, it’s a part of who you are and who you want to become; you’re working on becoming more and more of that person during every ride. And that feeling when you get off your bike, when you know you gave everything, which makes you feel so powerful and fierce, basically just shows you that everything is possible when you believe in yourself.
