Instructor spotlight: Dennis
Tell us a bit about yourself.
For the people that have taken my class, you know my name, but for those who haven’t taken my class yet (shame on you! 😉 ), my name is Dennis. I’m 27 years old (almost 28 whoop whoop!!!), I’m the youngest of three and I have an older sister and an older brother. My sister has given me the best gift a sister can give because 4 and a half years ago she made me an uncle!!!! And now I have two nephews (4 and 3 years old) and a niece (1 year old). I’ve been an instructor since March and have loved it from the moment I’ve taught my first class. Apart from Rocycle, I also work as a dancer and a dance teacher.
5 facts people might not know about you:
#1. I’m a big Disney fan. I have all the Disney classics on DVD number 1 to 65 (yes people, there are that many Disney classics).
#2. I still own a lot of DVDs. I also have Netflix, but when I really like a movie, I have to have it on DVD because you never know when a movie or a series gets taken off Netflix.
#3. I get easily scared. To give you an example of how easily I scare, let me tell you a story. During the musical The Bodyguard (which is not a scary show, I KNOW) there’s a moment where the stalker suddenly shows up after a blackout. I’m that person who gets scared in that moment and screams bloody murder so the people who sit around me get scared more by me than the moment itself.
#4. I don’t have a washing machine at home, so I have to do my laundry at a laundromat.
#5. I don’t like to cook. I don’t mind cooking for other people, but I don’t like to cook for myself. I like it when people come over so I can cook for someone. When it’s just me, I’d rather go out or get take-out or grab a steam meal from the store.
If you were not a Rocycle instructor, what would you like to do?
I wouldn’t really know. I also work as a dancer, and I teach dance as well, and I’m loving that. But I have no idea what else I would like to do. As long as it’s not something in an office 5 days a week, I’m good I think haha.
Why should people take your classes?
If you wanna hear some energetic tunes and be in a room with an infectious happy vibe, you should come to my class. I love to use uplifting music, which makes me more energetic and makes me give more energy to the riders. So if you are in need of some energy, come to my class!
Which song is your guilty pleasure?
Georgina Verbaan – Yo Quiero Bailar. This song is so wrong, but that makes it so great. It’s the definition of a guilty pleasure.
Who was your childhood hero?
The Pink Power Ranger! I wanted to be her! Pink was my favourite colour when I was little. I had a bow and an arrow just like her! I would play with it anywhere and everywhere when I was a kid. Also she did gymnastics, and I would do a cartwheel wherever I could.
Choose 3 words to best describe your post-Ro’Ride feeling?
Words to live by…
When in doubt… RO’RIDE it out.
All-time favourite Rocycle song?
Todrick Hall feat. RuPaul – Dem Beats
When I heard this song for the first time, I went nuts! This song is the definition of my music taste. It has a great beat, it’s a little over the top and it makes you go crazy!!!
What is your favourite ride of the week?
The 7 PM. For some reason I’m always so energetic during this class. After a 7 PM class, I feel on top of the world!
What is happiness to you?
Happiness is a tricky thing in life because it comes and goes. You need some sadness to find happiness again because you can’t be happy all the time (watch Inside Out). Happiness means that you are doing what you love. And sometimes to do the things that you love, you have to do things that you don’t.
What has been your most memorable moment of your Ro’career so far?
My first sold-out class. I had no idea that having a full class could have that impact on me. I felt on top of the world! Having 56 riders that are going 200 % with you on the songs that you chose is a feeling that I’d never had before that ride.
