instructor spotlight: Dennis
At Rocycle we’re all about Mind Body Music, but, just as important is the fact that we’re a family. So, to make sure each class is not just a party but a reunion, we’d like to introduce our instructors so you know a little bit more about them than their signature moves on the bike. Lucky us and lucky you – we’ve got a new instructor in town. Meet our newest addition, Dennis. Curious about whose classes he sneaks into when he’s not teaching? Want to know what makes his classes so different? Well, keep reading!
Hi Dennis! We are so happy to have you as an instructor and an interviewee! Can you introduce yourself?
Hello! My name is Dennis; I’m 27-years-old and the youngest of three children. I was born in Leiden but moved to Deventer when I was 9 months old, where I lived until I went to college in Groningen to study dance. After getting my bachelor’s degree in dance and teaching, I came to Amsterdam to start my dancing career.
Dance brought you to Amsterdam, but what brought you to Rocycle?
After three years working as a dancer, I started to think about what I still wanted to do in life. One of those things was to travel for a long period of time to experience new culture. So I got a working holiday visa for Australia and travelled and worked for eight months, during which time I spent a month in New Zealand. When I came back to Amsterdam, I wanted to do something different in addition to my dance work. My good friend Babette asked me to join one of her classes, and I was hooked immediately. When I saw they were looking for instructors, I instantly applied for the job.
And we’d like to thank Babette for that. Obviously exercise is very physical, but does it have a mental or spiritual component for you?
The reason that I exercise is that it makes me feel good. When you’ve done a good workout, and you walk out of the building, you feel like you can take on the world. A good workout is like a drug – but a healthy one!
Definitely a healthier indulgence. So when you’re not teaching yourself, whose classes do you like?
My favourite classes are Babette’s and Rowen’s, for different reasons. Babette is a good friend of mine, and we have similar taste in music, so I know when I take her class we will be riding to some good tunes. And during her class, I can sing along to like 90% of the songs, which I love to do! What I love about Rowen’s class is that she makes me feel like I can take on the world. She has a way of motivating you that makes you feel like you’re a king on your bike. She’ll push you in a way that you will be amazed by yourself during class.
Man, we better sign up before their classes fill up with a recommendation like that! You told us what sets their classes apart; how about yours? What makes it different?
I’m a very upbeat person who likes to put a positive spin on everything. Of course there are times when everything is shit, but if you change your way of looking at it, it might become something good. I think that my positive vibe and my way of trying to see that the glass is half full makes me me.
We cannot wait to see what you’ve got in store for us. Ok, last but not least: what does Rocycle mean to you?
Rocycle is something that gives me energy, makes me want to crush goals and set new limits. It is my little drug that I never wanna get rid of.
