It may not be in the forefront of your mind as much as holidays like King’s Day or Christmas, but we think that International Women’s Day is just as important. On March 8th, people (not just women!) across the globe are saluting the importance of sisterhood and empowering women. Wondering what you can do to hold the banner high for our strong, powerful women worldwide? As usual, we’ve got some ideas for you!
Support a female-led business. Whether you’re donating just €50 as a microloan for a woman to start her own business (which will help her produce enough income to feed herself and her family) through an organisation like BRAC or hitting up your local wine bar run by women and serving female-produced natural wines, it’s fantastic to give women the opportunity to flourish. On March 8th – and hopefully every day – be sure to support woman-run businesses. A little support goes a long way.
Be your own biggest supporter. This one is for all the ladies out there! In this life, we often feel alone, but there’s nothing more important than someone having your back. And while it’s great to have a wonderful, supportive network behind you, there’s no one better to support you than you. Be proud and raise your voice when something matters to you. Stand up for yourself! Because your opinions matter, and you deserve to be heard.
Keep a girl in school. It may sound crazy, but a girl who is lucky enough to get an education will end up having fewer children, be able to help her younger siblings and earn more money. Incredible organisations like Campaign for Female Education are dedicated to keeping young, underprivileged girls in schools in Africa. It’s true that you can change a girl’s future through her education.
Give women the right to choose. We probably take it for granted, particularly here in the Netherlands where things are relatively forward-thinking, but many women in the world do not have sexual rights or access to reproductive healthcare services. To combat these injustices, we love to donate or volunteer at the International Planned Parenthood Federation to make sure that women are free to make their own choices about their sexuality and well-being.
Adopt a positive mind-set. You may think it seems silly, but you should never underestimate the power of a positive mind-set, as the mind is a truly powerful thing. Thinking positively and encouraging other women to take control of their own destiny will give women a sense of calm, happiness and productivity. So long as a woman has a positive mind-set, there is nothing she cannot do. Girls who have the will have the ability!
Encourage women to take risks. And take them yourself! Doing things that are outside of our comfort zones is terrifying, particularly for women who have historically been encouraged to be submissive and take a back seat. But that’s why things need to change. Making the decision to change their lives and do something different is something empowered women do, so encourage the women in your life to do the same.
