Self-care for speedy recovery
When you’ve finished a Ro’ride, you can feel it. In a good way, of course, but you can feel it all the same. Your muscles may be a bit achey, and you’re probably feeling drained.
This means that you’ve had a killer, effective workout. But you want to be ready to clip in tomorrow or the day after, right? In order to do so, it’s important to indulge in a bit of self-care to speed up the recovery process and have you right back on that bike in no time.
We certainly wouldn’t turn our noses up at a long day spent luxuriating in the spa, but for most of us, this is a bit unrealistic. Instead, we’ve got a few tips for self-care practices that are manageable and really work.
Take a deep breath. This may sound simple, but its benefits are immense. Taking even one minute to close your eyes, still your mind and take a few slow, deep breaths can really help your body move toward recovery. A little extra oxygen will also turn off your fight-or-flight mechanism, calming your muscles and promoting rest.
Take the time to stretch. When we created Rocycle, we created it to be a total and effective workout. And part of those 45 minutes are the couple minutes at the end reserved for stretching. Taking the time to jiggle out any knots in your hamstrings or biceps now will make tomorrow’s ride that much easier.
Take store of what works for you. Self-care, like your exercise routine, is not a static thing. It should always be evolving. Pay attention to what your body is telling you and learn from it.
Take a few hours out of your evening for a massage. As we said, we know a full-on spa day may not be in the cards for you, but squeezing in a sports massage can do wonders for your body and your recovery time. Book a deep-tissue or sports massage once a week to keep you on your toes.
Take a snack that will restore your glycogen stores. It’s important to replenish the glycogen in your body after a tough workout. Reach for complex carbohydrates like a roasted sweet potato to increase and improve your performance.
Take a bath. Probably one of the easiest, cheapest and most relaxing ways to help encourage recovery after you were in beastmode on the bike is to take a bath. Sprinkle in some Epsom salts to calm sore muscles. The 30 minutes you spend in the tub will also help you relax completely. We like the sound of that!
